Product Review – Dr Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Peel

Hi guys,

As I’ve mentioned earlier I am passionate about skincare and therefore I am always trying out new products. I have a dedicated page on facebook where I review different skincare and beauty products (check it out here). I will also post these reviews on my blog which will allow me to go into more detail and answer any of your questions.I would like to mention that this is my personal opinion and others may have a different experience with the same products. Additionally, I aim to make these products reviews educational when I can, to inform and help you guys identify commonly used ingredients in beauty products. A lot of this knowledge comes from my pharmaceutical background, my own research and my natural curiosity to good skincare!

Dr Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Peel (Extra Strength Formula)

$24.00 for 5 day treatment
$126.00 for 30 day treatment

✔️  Can feel the product working during and after use – I felt a slight burning and tingling sensation afterwards for a minute or two. (According to research, this means the acid is penetrating through the skin).
✔️  Face feels extremely clean after use – rubbery clean.
✔️  Smoothens the texture of the skin and I found that it gets rid of minor bumps and lumps and little blemishes giving you a nice even canvas.
✔️  Contains scientifically proven ingredients that are known to improve the overall appearance of the skin. To name a few, these include:
– Step 1: Claims to ‘exfoliate and smooth’
✔️  Salicylic Acid: A beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) which functions as a strong keratolytic agent – meaning it exfoliates the surface layer of the skin. Can also have anti-inflammatory properties as it is a derivative of aspirin. It is very commonly found in many anti-acne products.
✔️  Glycolic Acid: An alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) which also functions as an exfoliator. It is also known to regenerate collagen, thicken the skin and even skin tone (wowsa!). Glycolic acid is also the smallest in regards to molecular weight when compared to other acids used in cosmetics. This basically means, the smaller the molecule, the easier for it to penetrate the skin and show effect (some agents never truly get absorbed into the skin because of this and just sit on the surface and practically do nothing!). This is why it is very often seen in numerous anti-ageing products.
✔️  Lactic Acid: Also an AHA so similar properties to glycolic acid. Additionally, it is also a humectant – an agent that attracts and holds onto water
– Step 2: claims to ‘firm and lift’
✔️  Retinol: The ingredient of ingredients!! (My absolute favourite so I am a little biased). Retinol is a derivative of Vitamin A and offers many benefits including: production of elastin and collagen which fights against noticeable signs of ageing and also increases cell turnover giving you fresh new skin.
✔️  Ascorbic Acid: Also known as Vitamin C. Known to fight free radical damage that causes ageing, boosts collagen and brigtens the skin.

✖️  Pretty expensive
✖️  Very strong scent – especially the extra strength formula – almost feels like you are inhaling alcohol. I personally believe that it is too strong for daily use – I would use it every 3-4 days at most.
✖️  Although the product contains some amazing ingredients, the percentage or concentration of these are not listed. Hence, I am unsure how effective it could truly be.
✖️  The ingredients will increase photosensitivity – i.e. sensitivity to the sun and therefore needs to be followed by a day-time moisturizer (you should all be doing this anyway – sun is not your friend sister!).
✖️  I felt like my skin was a little dry afterwards so had to follow with either a hydrating bedtime treatment or strong moisturizer.
✖️  Contains alcohol and fragrance – may be unsuitable for some
✖️  Stability of some of the ingredients can be argued as it is exposed to oxygen
✖️  Also contains malic, mandelic and citric acid – not much evidence that they are effective skincare agents

❓ Would I re-purchase?
Probably not the Extra Strength formula but DEFINITELY the regular strength only because I found the extra strength too strong for me. I love these ingredients and believe in them and I felt like my face was very clean and even after using this product. My face was still smooth and shiny in the morning and my makeup went on beautifully. Highly recommend although it’s pretty pricey. I’d love to keep this in my skincare cabinet and use it maybe once or twice a week, or before an event or just when I want to give my skin a boost.

Both of these photos is how my skin looked after using the peel – I was really happy with the results! (p.s – no makeup)
