Hi beautiful people,

I come to you again with another beauty post..seriously though, can we ever get enough? You can review my standard skincare routine in my previous post (here) but today’s talk will be about my top 3 products I can’t live a day without in summer..I believe skincare and makeup in summer should be simple. There is nothing worst than your makeup melting off and looking blotchy in the heat. Plus, who wants to wear that much makeup in the humidity anyway? Summer is the perfect time to go minimalistic with the makeup. The sun will give you that tint of colour you normally achieve with makeup and also give you the added glow! So go outside, ditch the foundation and have some fun!

But first….SUNSCREEN!

I am not going to go into the 1 million reasons why the sun is your skin’s worst enemy but I would like to stress the importance of protecting your skin from the sun..EVERY SINGLE DAY! I use sunscreen all year round but it’s especially important in the warmer weathers as the sun rays are aggressive. I like to use the highest protection available – at least an SPF 50+ – and a product that is broad spectrum – protects from both UVA and UVB rays. And if you think you can’t tan with sunscreen, think again! You definitely can..I still achieve a gorgeous tan with sunscreen..the trick is to gradually build up your tan by spending some consistent time in the sun every day. A product that I’ve used for years is the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Face Sunscreen Lotion.

A good one for bubs is the Banana Boat Baby SPF 50+

The reason I love this one for babies is because its so easy to apply and spread. I was using a cream sunscreen before this and she got frustrated by the time I was able to apply the product all over her body. Therefore, I highly recommend this one.

Educational Tip – What exactly is SPF?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and is basically a measure of how long you can remain in the sun before getting sunburned. So for example, and SPF of 20 means you can stay in the sun 20 times longer than you could without protection. Hence, a higher SPF means you can spend a longer duration of time before the UVB rays start causing damage. However, it is recommended that you re-apply sunscreen every 2-3 hours to get the best protection.

Vitamin C Serum

Like I said in the beginning..summer makeup and skincare should be simple..some nights after I have cleansed and toned my skin I ditch all the creams and moisturisers and just apply Vitamin C. I wake up to the most beautiful radiant glow in the morning. Vitamin C is great in the summer because it fights against free radicals caused by the sun and therefore prevents ageing. It also gives you a brighter complexion, even’s your skin tone and increases skin hydration. Concentrations as low as 0.6% can give you all the benefits I just listed. I have been using the Mario Badescu Vitamin C Serum and absolutely love it.

Educational Tip

When buying your vitamin C product (cream, gel or serum) look out for Ascorbic Acid or L-Ascorbic Acid on the top of your ingredient list. This is an outstanding form of Vitamin C, however you may come across some of the following which have also been demonstrated to give great results:

sodium ascorbyl phosphate, retinyl ascorbate, tetrahexydecyl ascorbate, ascorbyl palmitate, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate and ascorbyl glucoside.

The more important factor to consider when buying your Vitamin C product is the product packaging. Vitamin C is susceptible to breaking down when exposed to air and light. Therefore, it it crucial that you buy products packaged in opaque tubes and air-resistant bottles. This will help keep the ingredients stable after you start using the product.

Tinted Moisturiser

I said ditch the foundation..I wasn’t joking. Go for something a lot lighter like a tinted moisturiser. Believe me, there are so many good one’s out there! They still give you decent coverage and are much more suited for daily use. They let your skin breathe and hence won’t clog your pores like foundation will (especially in the heat!). My favourites are the Laura Mercier Illuminating Tinted Moisturiser and the NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser (also contains SPF which is an added bonus).

Hope you enjoyed my top 3 picks to keep your skin in tip-top condition this summer. Let me know what products you use in the warmer months to keep your skin looking great.
